The Cagarras islands in morning fog off Rio, seen from Leblon. A flat grey sea and a dark rock at the edge.

Objects for everyday life,
and the people behind them.

Each drop begins with a journey.

Observation comes first. Objects come after. We go, we record what we find, and only then do we make: small editions of objects, photographs and printed notes, made with the people who hold the craft.

Saltwater is a practice: four drops a year, made with the people who hold the craft, each piece credited to the hands that made it.

Go. See. Return.

Clay-covered hands open beside a small vase turning on a potter’s wheel, in black and white.

Drop 01

Drop 01 will come from a journey through Japan, from Tokyo to the island of Naoshima, and from the makers met along the way.

Rio de Janeiro Tokyo Naoshima
More than 18,000 km by air. Some 760 km by train. Twenty minutes by ferry.

GoNow

The route follows provenance: who makes what, where, and why. Even within Japan, the same object changes from one region to the next: the material, the hand, the reason it exists.

See

Time at the makers’ tables, asking what rarely gets asked: how they learned, what they refuse to change, who decides when a piece is done.

Return

Retorno, in Portuguese: the part of every journey that comes home to Rio. A few objects, made with the people met along the way, each carrying its maker’s name and the story of how it came to be.
